THE ANSWER

Remember? The summer
we went to Whitefish,
the summer I had cancer?
Soaking up lazy sunshine
on the rickety dock one minute,
glazed with shock the next.

I’d planned to follow the eagles
as I hiked along deeply rutted
backroads to nowhere,
to watch them soar above the treetops.

Instead I wandered the edges of hell.

I implored those winged champions
to guide me, to help me rise
out of my despair,
to make me well again.

As I silently prayed,
the majestic birds sailed from view.
Passing behind me
they touched the morning sun,
just inches from heaven
and God heard.
