186. A MULTITUDE

186.

A MULTITUDE
We sat at your bedside
in the early December twilight,
Tom gripping your hand,
me across from him
clutching your forearm,
your toes going purple
as they do at the end.

We asked the nurse
to give you another dose
of morphine, to ease
your terrible pain.
We didn't understand how
crowded the room had become,
angels all around you, Dad,
ready to escort you home.
