199. WHAT WE TALK ABOUT NOW
199.
WHAT WE TALK ABOUT NOW
I get a call from an old friend,
we've talked weekly for years.
We used to talk about where to go
on Friday nights, maybe Mac & Caps
for Singapore Slings or swimming
at Square Lake on Saturday afternoons.
Then quite suddenly, if seemed everyone
we knew got married, including us,
had babies, the babies started school,
a nano second later, offspring graduated,
got jobs, married, had their own babies.
Our conversations changed as we became
wives, mothers, then grandmas.
Now we talk about our health,
all of us old as Methuselah.
Aches and pains, hearing aids,
hip and knee replacements,
cataract surgery, prostate cancer,
Parkinson's, dementia and
god help us, Independent Living.
We're all suffering to some extent
and no one's ready for tomorrow.

This is me, ruminating on the state of my state.
