203. THE SUMMER KNOWS

 203.

I'M ALWAYS DREAMING

Her garden exploding with
bright purple phlox
and audacious orange
ditch lilies,
hand-me-down
pass-along plants
from her mother's
garden years ago.

They give
a rich feeling
of continuity
and history.
Their predecessors
once bloomed
in her mother's
carefully tended

flower beds.
If she closes her eyes
she can see her mom
clearly, wearing
pedal pushers
pulling weeds,
her heart

happy.
