208. HER GARDEN EXPLODES

208.

HER GARDEN EXPLODES

Bright purple phlox,
audacious orange
ditch lilies,
hand-me-down
pass-along-plants
from her mother's
carefully tended
flower beds years ago.

The flowers nurture
an appreciation
of continuity
and history,
their ancestors
once blooming
at Golden Lake.

If she closes her eyes
she can see her mom,
wearing Keds
and pedal pushers,
knees grimy,
pulling weeds,
her heart happy.
