ILLUMINATION
Bright white sunlight scatters stark
rectangles across a corner of her desk.
Distracted, she notices the show
outside her window, flowers
gaudy in the late summer heat,
like old women wearing too much
make-up to disguise their age.
Daisies wallow in lethargy,
ragged daylilies droop tiredly
beside the curved concrete drive,
straining to stand tall again.
The green exuberance of spring
has given way to blowsy indifference.
August drags into September,
the circle of the seasons pounds
with a strong regular rhythm,
leaving her vacant heart racing.
